McBride Construction has been building in Christchurch since 2009. We started as a residential builder, and we grew up in the middle of the Canterbury rebuild.
That period shaped the company. Construction projects repairing and rebuilding thousands of damaged homes and buildings under insurance and Earthquake Commission programmes meant learning to run high volumes of work with tight documentation, strict cost control, external scrutiny and clients who were, understandably, at the end of their patience. It forced us to build systems, estimating discipline and quality processes that a builder of our size would not normally have.
Today we are applying that capability to commercial construction and to building a facilities management and maintenance business. We deliver commercial new builds, fitouts, refurbishments, seismic strengthening and re-roofing across Christchurch, the wider Canterbury region and Timaru, and we run a dedicated maintenance team for commercial property owners and managers.
We are still a privately owned Canterbury company. When you deal with us, you deal with the people who make the decisions.

How We Deliver Our Services
Tender, negotiated, early contractor involvement, design and build or construction management.
Most contractors our size subcontract almost everything and manage the result. We do not.
Quantity surveying, project management, programme and carpentry are delivered by McBride employees. We also carry an internal painting capability and a directly employed maintenance team. Everything else is subcontracted to a managed supply chain of Canterbury trades we work with repeatedly.
That structure gives our clients three things:
We know what our own labour actually costs because we pay for it. Our estimates are built up from real rates, not assembled from other people’s quotes.
The trades that most often sit on the critical path, carpentry and structural carpentry, are ours to direct.
When something needs fixing, it does not disappear into a chain of subcontracts.

Everyone goes home safe at the end of every day. That principle is non-negotiable and it drives how we run every site. We take a pragmatic, practical approach to risk: controls that work in the real world, not paperwork for its own sake. We hold a zero-tolerance position on high-risk behaviour, because no programme, budget, or deadline is worth someone not getting home.
Communication
Clear, proactive communication is central to how we deliver. We keep clients, consultants, and subcontractors informed at every stage, good news or bad, with honest reporting and no surprises. Strong communication keeps programmes on track and keeps everyone confident about where a project stands. On occupied or operational sites, it’s also what lets us work around a client’s business with minimal disruption.
Sustainability
We build and maintain with the future in mind. Construction and demolition waste makes up an estimated 40 to 50% of all material sent to New Zealand landfills, and we take practical responsibility for reducing our share of it. We design out waste before work starts, make responsible material choices, and actively manage diversion on site, aiming to leave every site in better shape than we found it.
